Personal Introductions

Introducing yourself to your classmates can be an intimidating experience. However, in a fully online class, it is essential for everyone to become familiar with each other. Doing so will create a more collaborative classroom environment. Please watch this video and draw some inspiration. After watching, post a brief introduction about yourself. Make sure to include information about your childhood, your hobbies, and one interesting fact about yourself that you have never shared with classmates before.

  1. Hi, my name is Kelly Dunham. I was born and raised in Huntsville, AL but have also lived in Portland, OR and Auburn, AL, where I obtained my bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Fine Art. I’m a licensed cosmetologist and also work as a piano instructor and oil portrait artist (when I have the time and find commissions). My hobbies include reading, running races, writing music on piano/guitar, exploring creative culinary solutions to produce comfort food for my family (our house is gluten/soy/mostly casein free), photography, figure drawing, and documentaries.

Injustice, ignorance, and abuse make me intervene. Chaos, loud noises, crowds, and authoritarianism make me want to escape. Cleanliness, order, quiet, solitude and books make me content. Showers, kindness, and humor make me happy. Sharing my light and acknowledging the light in others makes my joyous. I stand for fairness/equality, compassion, nonviolence, forgiveness, understanding, and a united world community. I strive to actively focus on balancing caution with trust; control with letting things go; and assertiveness with openness/acceptance. After 34 years, this is still hard!

The main focus in my life is my 4-year-old daughter and light, Vivian, who seems to keeps me in a perpetual state of wonderment. I also help care for my 81-year-old grandmother and best friend, Peggy, who isn’t a day over 30 but unfortunately, can’t see well enough to be totally independent. My earliest memory is the excitement of figuring out “Somewhere Out There”, on her organ, at age 3, in her small, clean, sunlit bedroom. Some of my favorite things right now are ambient electronic music, Louis C.K/Amy Schumer, “How to Make a Murderer” documentary on Netflix, and literally anything written by Mary Oliver.

Nice to meet you- looking forward to a great semester!
    -Kelly

  2. Good Afternoon Everyone,

My name is Junell "Nellie" Christian. I am a wife and mother of four children (Reagan - 13, Ainsley - 11, Sierra - 9, and Ike - 7). We are an extremely busy family (I actually had one of my daughter's friends say we were the family that never runs out of batteries - I took it as a complement). My husband and I met as Crimson Tide athletes - I played soccer for Alabama, and my husband played football. After playing for the University of Alabama, we decided to stay in town. I coach soccer for Tuscaloosa United (U11 boys’ team and U11 girls team) as well as the 9th Grade Boys Soccer Team for Northridge High School. I am also very involved at my kids' school where I serve on the PTA Board. My hobbies include running, playing soccer, anything outdoors, and learning new skills of any kind.

The first part of my career was spent in higher education. I earned an undergraduate degree from UA in Human Performance, Non-Teaching and a Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration. For 12 years, I worked at the community college level, beginning as the women's soccer coach and ending my career in Student Services. I did everything from recruiting to advising to outreach with the West Alabama K-12 schools. It was through this work that I realized I was in need of a change and wanted to work in a K-12 setting. I went back to school and now find myself as a Graduate Assistant in the College of Education, pursuing an Alternative Master's Degree in Special Education, Gifted and Talented.

As a kid, I had aspirations of playing professional soccer for the Women’s Professional Soccer League. I had the opportunity, but decided it was time to step aside and try my hand at coaching; it was here that my professional “teaching” career was born. I will graduate in the fall 2016 with my degree in Special Education, Gifted and Talented and begin my second career as a teacher in a K-12 system. My ultimate career goal is to make an impact in the lives of children as well as influence and encourage the next generation to be successful and use their power for good.

Looking forward to a great class!
    Have a great day!
    Junell "Nellie" Christian

PS – Something few people know about me: I got to meet Pele’ – the living legend in the world of soccer. A Brazilian native, he has been the face of soccer for generations and paved the way for the modern game. He presented me with a trophy for a state-wide competition I won as a 10 year old.

  3. My name is Kevin Besnoy and I am an assistant professor at The University of Alabama. When I am not teaching, I love to some meat. I have found that it is hard to mess things up when smoking meat - our motto is cook it low and slow. My favorite meat to smoke is a brisket and ribs. I have smoke duck before and it was great. I have been married for 17 years and have twins (7 years old).

I teach practicing teachers (and future teachers) how to design appropriate instruction for gifted and talented students. At the end of this class, I expect to learn more about how I can differentiate instruction in an online environment.
